The timing of David Harbour’s recent interview has ignited fresh debate about his public image amid ongoing controversies. During a November 4 interview with Esquire Spain, the actor offered reflections on aging and fame that some interpret as self-serving, particularly given recent developments in his personal and professional life.
In the interview, Harbour addressed whether finding fame later in life makes one less likely to “become a jerk.” He responded, “For me it certainly is. I think the traps of youth are so bound up with the idea of self-importance, the traps of fame are so bound up with self-importance. The great thing about getting famous when you’re older is that you know you’re going to die, so who cares?”
This philosophical take on avoiding jerkhood has landed awkwardly given the circumstances surrounding Harbour. His ex-wife, Lily Allen, recently released her album “West End Girl,” which contains songs detailing the painful breakup of their four-year marriage and alleged affairs that occurred during their time together.
Adding to the controversy, reports emerged shortly after the interview that Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown had filed a bullying and harassment claim against Harbour. The claim, reportedly consisting of “pages and pages of accusations,” was filed before the start of the fifth season, prompting a months-long investigation. Harbour plays Brown’s father figure on the hit Netflix series.
Harbour attempted to project wisdom when asked about working with the young stars of Stranger Things, calling them “pretty good kids” and stating he’s “always here to help them out.” This statement comes amid the ongoing investigation into his conduct with the young actress.
When asked about regrets from his past 50 years, Harbour offered a measured response: “I would change either everything or nothing. You either accept your path completely and realise that even the pain and the slip-ups and the mistakes are all part of the journey, and that there’s truth and growth, wisdom and deeper empathy and connection in all that.”
The irony of Harbour’s “anti-jerk wisdom” emerging during this challenging period is not lost on critics. His interview, conducted during his promotional tour for upcoming projects including the premiere of Stranger Things season 5, arrives at a time when multiple serious questions about his conduct are being raised.
The contrast between Harbour’s philosophical take on aging gracefully and the serious allegations against him highlights the complex challenge celebrities face in navigating their public image during periods of intense scrutiny
