Keya’s Snacks, launched by chef and entrepreneur Keya Wingfield, has quickly gained popularity for its unique potato chip flavors: Bombay Spice and Black Salt. What started as a local hit in Richmond, Virginia, now ships nationwide, tapping into a growing consumer demand for authentic, globally-inspired snack options.
The Story Behind the Brand
Wingfield’s journey began during the pandemic, when she sold meals and treats to her community, with the chips emerging as an unexpected standout. The chips are kettle-fried and seasoned with a complex masala blend sourced from farmer partners in Northwest India, ensuring both quality and fair wages for local women. Wingfield states, “I knew what the chips could and should taste like. It was very important to me to bring that pure flavor and ingredients from the motherland.”
The branding, designed by Wingfield’s brother, reflects her personal story. The pink and orange packaging evokes Indian spices and her homeland, while design elements pay tribute to her mother’s saris and the Hindu goddess Annapurna, the deity of food. The bag also includes a poem by her husband and a personal note, ending with a dedication to her late son, Daksh.
Flavors and Taste
The Bombay Spice chips deliver a bold blend of ginger, garlic, cumin, mango powder, and other spices. The Black Salt chips, described by Wingfield as the “cultural cousin of salt and vinegar,” offer a unique tangy flavor. The chips pair well with Indian dishes like mint chutney or creamy dips such as French onion or tzatziki.
Why This Matters
Keya’s Snacks demonstrates a shift in the snack industry toward more diverse and authentic flavors. Wingfield’s chips represent an intersection of immigration, cultural identity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Her brand highlights the growing appeal of global cuisines and the desire for food that tells a story.
“I wanted to create a product that was half Indian and half American, much like me, much like my household.”
